Our Shoreline

A rare species found on H-K's shores

Great Lakes Wheat Grass is a striking dune grass with its silvery grey colour. It is considered to be a provincially rare vascular plant. However, its distribution is so limited, it could be considered to be globally rare. This species is still prevelant along the beaches of Huron-Kinloss. Try and spot it the next time you are at the beach!

Protecting Our Beach

Dunes are mounds of sand that have been built with the help of specially adapted coastal plants, which occupy parts of the lakeshore usually associated with sand beaches. Dunes provide many important benefits to people, but they are paradoxically sensitive to human disturbance. We would ask that you refrain from installing structures on the beach or disturbing the natural state of the sands by removing grasses or cutting trees.

Unauthorized Items to be Removed

Council has directed that some proactive steps be taken to protect the dunes. Please be advised that this summer we will be tagging certain items located on the beach north of the 10th concession in order to alert owners that they will be removed this coming fall.
