The Animal Control By-law deals with issues such as:
- Licencing dogs
- dogs running at large
- "poop and scoop"
- dog attacks
In the Township of Huron-Kinloss no person shall have more than three (3) dogs on any premises unless they own and operate a licenced kennel.
Township of Huron Kinloss Dog Licence(s) can be purchased at:
- The Huron-Kinloss Municipal office, 21 Queen St. Ripley
- Lucknow Home Hardware, 626 Campbell St, Lucknow
- Country Depot, 315 Hamilton Lane, Kincardine.
Cost for a dog license is:
- $15.00 before March 1st
- $25.00 after March 1st
The dog tag must be affixed to assigned dog at all times for easy retrieval of your dog ( with exception of hunting dogs). Please note that starting in 2010, the Township will be using 'permanent' dog tags. It is expected that these tags will last 10 years. The Township of Huron Kinloss hopes to reduce waste by moving to these permanent tags.
Dogs Running at Large
Dog licences are vital in helping with the safe and easy return of your pet. Dogs found straying at large without a licence in the Township of Huron Kinloss will be impounded at the Ripley Huron Veterinary Clinic. Prior to claiming your dog a fee must be paid at the municipal office as per the Consolidated Fees By-Law. You will also be required to pay for any boarding or veterinarian costs incurred during his/her stay. A dog licence if necessary will also be required prior to the release of the dog.
"Poop and Scoop"
As a dog owner it is your responsibility to clean up after it. The Animal Control By-Law 99-21 stipulates that every person who owns, harbors, possesses or is in control of any dog shall remove forthwith and dispose of any excrement left by said dog on any property in the Township, other than the premises of the owner of the dog. Violators will be charged.

All Dogs shall be in the care and control of the owner at all times. The owner of any dog that has previously bitten shall ensure that the dog is muzzled or leashed while the dog is outdoors.
All dog attacks or bites should be immediately reported to the By-Law Enforcement Officer at 519-395-3844.
The Dog Owners Liability Act R.S.O. 1990 Chapter D.16 is in effect and will be enforced when needed in extreme situations.
No person shall, unless permitted by this act;
- Own a pit bull
- Breed a pit bull
- Transfer a pit bull
- Abandon a pit bull or allow it to stray
- Import a pit bull
- Or train a pit bull for fighting
One may own a pit bull if it was owned prior to 2005, or born before the during the 90 day period after the Public Safety Related to Dogs Statute Law Amendment Act came into force. 2005, c.2, s.1 (16).
Under the Dogs Statute Law Amendment Act 2005 (Bill 132), a pit bull is defined as:
- Pit Bull Terrier
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- American Pit Bull Terrier
- A dog that has an appearance and physical characteristics that are substantially similar to those of dogs referred to above.
The burden of proof in proving that a dog is not a pit bull lies on the owner of the dog.
