Boards and Committees

Committees and boards provide valuable input to Council.

The Committee of Adjustment is authorized by the Planning Act to consider applications for:
  • Minor variances from the provisions of the zoning by-law

  • Extensions, enlargements or variations of existing legal non-conforming uses under the zoning by-law

  • Land Division (severing a new lot from an existing lot, adding land to an existing lot, easements, mortgages or leases in excess of 21 years)

  • Determining whether a particular use conforms with the provisions of the zoning by-law where the uses of land, buildings or structures permitted in the by-law are defined in general terms 

The County of Bruce Planning Department is responsible for the preparation of the planning reports and recommendations to the Committee for these applications.

The seven members of Council have been appointed to the Committee of Adjustment and meet as required monthly in conjunction with the Council Meeting (Planning Applications) scheduled on the second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

The Court of Revision hears appeals on assessments for proposed drainage work. The assessment includes the portion of the cost of the proposed drainage work to be collected as taxes from the landowner.

To appeal to the Court of Revision a landowner assessed for the drainage work must give a written notice of appeal to the Clerk at least ten days before the first sitting of the Court.  The notice must state which land is assessed too high or too low or which land has not had proper consideration of its use.


A decision of the Court of Revision can be appealed to the Ontario Drainage Tribunal.

Court of Revision takes place once an appeal notice is received.

In January 2020, the NWMO announced they had secured the sufficient amount of land in Municipality of South Bruce  to continue studies for the DGR. This announcement meant that the Township of Huron-Kinloss was removed from the site-selection process and no longer considered a host community for the project.

In light of the Township of Huron-Kinloss no longer in the site selection process, Huron-Kinloss Council as agreed to dissolve the Nuclear Waste Community Advisory Committee (NWCAC). We thank our Committee Members for their dedication to keeping the community informed on the Adaptive Phased Management Project. 

The Township will continue to keep our residents informed as future decisions unfold with this project.

This Committee of Council has certain decision-making abilities and can decide if a Property Standards Order should be upheld, dismissed, modified or if an extension should be given.

When a property owner in the Township of Huron-Kinloss has been served a Property Standards Order they have the right to appeal it to the Property Standards Committee. The appeal request must be submitted in writing to the Secretary of the Committee.

The Property Standards Committee is made up of five members of the public. Meetings are held on an as needed basis and are open to the public.
