Council Highlights April 15th 2024

The Township of Huron-Kinloss Council meeting was held in Council Chambers at 21 Queen Street in Ripley at 7:00 p.m. Highlights from the meeting include:

Boat Club Dredging

Council has provided a letter in support of the Pine River Boat Club’s request for channel maintenance dredging at the mouth of the Pine River during 2024 and 2025. Their letter of approval will accompany the Boat Club’s request to the appropriate approval authority.

Clean Farms Partnership

The Director of Public Works presented a report to Council on a partnership agreement with Cleanfarms to collect and recycle bale wrap at the Huron Landfill. Through the partnership agreement, Cleanfarms will supply a hydraulic baling machine and the Township will supply the labour to make the bales and a machine to operate the hydraulic press. Under this agreement, the Township will own the baling machine and be responsible for any maintenance and repairs.

Township staff believe that while the current program for recycling agricultural plastics is a step forward, the ultimate aim should be a province-wide initiative funded by the producers themselves, citing successful models in PEI and Quebec as sustainable long-term solutions.

Community Improvement Plan

Council passed the Community Improvement Plan By-law. A community improvement plan (CIP) is an economic development tool that encourages community revitalization by providing financial assistance to business owners and commercial property owners. This update enables Huron-Kinloss businesses to tap into new funding from the County of Bruce's Spruce the Bruce programs. It also expands assistance to downtown businesses, aiming to enhance accessibility and create new offerings.
