About the role:
As Building Inspector, you will play a key role in protecting public safety and supporting responsible growth throughout the Township of Huron-Kinloss. This position offers a broad and rewarding range of work spanning building, plumbing, and on-site sewage systems, allowing you to apply your technical expertise while working closely with residents, builders, designers, contractors, and development partners.
As part of our team, you will apply your technical expertise and knowledge of the Ontario Building Code to review permit applications, conduct inspections, and provide guidance that supports safe, compliant construction throughout the Township. You will exercise professional judgment throughout the development process, managing permit and inspection files while contributing to planning, zoning, and development-related initiatives.
As a Building Inspector you will:
- Review and process building, plumbing, and septic permit applications for compliance with the Ontario Building Code, municipal by-laws, approved plans, and applicable legislation.
- Conduct inspections of new construction, renovations, plumbing systems, and septic systems at key stages of construction.
- Provide practical and customer-focused guidance to property owners, contractors, designers, and the public.
- Maintain inspection records, correspondence, and compliance documentation.
- Collaborate with municipal staff and participate in development review activities supporting planning, zoning, and by-law enforcement initiatives.

What we're looking for:
- Post-secondary education in Building Sciences, Engineering, Architectural Technology, or a related discipline, or completion of a relevant building trades apprenticeship. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Experience in building inspection, permit review, construction, engineering, architecture, or a related field, preferably within a municipal environment.
- Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, Building Code Act, and related legislation.
- Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing qualifications and BCIN registration in relevant categories, or the ability to obtain required qualifications within a defined timeframe.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret construction drawings, assess compliance, and exercise sound technical judgment.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills with the ability to work effectively with residents, contractors, consultants, and colleagues.
- A valid Ontario Class G Driver's License.
- Ability to safely navigate active construction sites and work effectively in both office and field environments.
