About the Role: 

Detailed Position Description

The Landfill Operator in Charge plays a crucial role in the effective operation of the landfill sites. This individual is tasked with overseeing a wide range of responsibilities, all of which contribute to the safe operation of the landfills.

  • The Landfill Operator in Charge is to ensure the proper collection and distribution of waste at the landfill site. This involves monitoring and controlling the flow of waste into the landfill, ensuring it is properly sorted and disposed of according to regulations.
  • They must also schedule and oversee the construction of new fill areas, ensuring the landfill's capacity is utilized effectively and safely.
  • They are responsible for the overall maintenance and cleanliness of the landfill sites. This includes regular inspections to identify and address any potential hazards, as well as ensuring all health and safety practices are followed.
  • They must also schedule and manage repairs for landfill equipment, coordinating with external contractors to ensure timely and efficient maintenance.
  • This position must be able to effectively assign tasks to their team, provide clear instructions, and offer support when needed.
  • They are also the primary point of contact for public inquiries and complaints, requiring a high level of professionalism and a strong customer service orientation.

Who We're Looking For: 

  • A strong equipment operator with hands‑on experience operating a compactor, loader, excavator, and other common landfill equipment.
  • Strong coordination skills with the abilities to assign tasks and support a team.
  • Safety-conscious, with a commitment to adhering to all health and safety protocols and training.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, ensuring accurate record-keeping and timely responses to public inquiries.
  • Possesses good communication skills to effectively interact with contractors, the public, public works staff and supervisors.
  • Physically fit and able to work in a challenging environment, operating equipment and performing maintenance.
  • Comfortable using a computer for everyday tasks such as email, data entry and common workplace software.
