Fire Prevention Week: Charge Into Fire Safety™

Fire Prevention Week is October 4 to 10, and this year’s theme is Charge Into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower!

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day, including phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and scooters. A few simple charging habits can help reduce the risk of a fire in your home.

Charge safely:

  • Use the cord and charger that came with your device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Charge devices on a hard, flat surface away from anything that can burn.
  • Unplug devices once they are fully charged.
  • For larger items such as e-bikes, scooters and power tools, charge outside when possible and never block an exit while charging.

Know the warning signs. Stop using a battery or device if it becomes very hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

Join Us for a Fire Prevention Week Open House!

Huron-Kinloss Fire & Emergency Services is connecting with residents across the community during Fire Prevention Week with Family Open Houses in Ripley, Lucknow and Point Clark.

Public Works: What to Know This Fall

Fall is a busy season for Huron-Kinloss Public Works. From roads and municipal water systems to waste and seasonal services, here are the key updates and reminders to know as we prepare for winter.

Fall Hydrant Flushing

Annual hydrant flushing is taking place in the Lakeshore area from Amberley to Huronville from October 5 to November 6.

During flushing, you may notice temporary changes in water pressure or discoloured water. If this happens:

  • Remove faucet screens and filters.
  • Run your water for approximately 20 minutes or until it runs clear.
  • Avoid washing white laundry between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to help prevent possible staining.

Thank you for your patience while this seasonal maintenance is completed.

Closing Up the Cottage? Schedule Your Water Shut-Off

If you’re preparing your seasonal property for winter, remember to arrange your water shut-off at least 48 hours in advance. There is no fee for this service.

Curb stops should only be operated by the Water Operating Authority. Property owners remain responsible for draining their own water lines to help prevent pipes from freezing or bursting.

📞 To schedule your water shut-off, call 519-395-3735.

October Road Work

Public Works continues to complete road and infrastructure improvements before winter. Work scheduled for October and into November includes:

  • Park Street, Ripley: scheduled to be completed by the end of October.
  • Huron Street, Ripley: sidewalk work expected during the first two weeks of October.
  • Petum Court and Tuscarora Road, Point Clark: paving expected by the end of October.
  • Guest Avenue, Kinloss: paving expected in October or November.
  • Southline Avenue and Bushell Street intersection: paving expected in October or November.

Please expect temporary delays around construction areas. Schedules may change depending on weather and contractor availability.

Make the Most of Your Leaves This Fall

Before bagging up your leaves, consider putting them to work around your property! Mulched leaves can add nutrients to your lawn, protect plants over winter, enrich your compost and provide habitat for local wildlife.

Learn more about your options for managing fall leaves.

If you prefer to dispose of your leaves, there are two other options available.

Yard Waste Depots

The Township’s Yard Waste Depots are open 24/7 until mid-November at:

📍 2083 Concession 6 E, beside the Huron Landfill
📍 907 Havelock Street, Lucknow, south of the soccer fields

The depots accept leaves and garden waste in paper bags, brush and branches under six inches. Please do not leave logs, stumps, construction materials, household garbage or large dump loads.

Fall Leaf Collection

Curbside leaf collection will take place on Monday, November 9 and Tuesday, November 10.

  • Leaves must be in paper bags.
  • Bags must weigh no more than 25 lbs (11 kg).
  • Bags must be at the curb by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled collection day.
  • Watch the Township website for collection details for your area.

Kinloss Landfill Closing for the Season

Planning a fall trip to the landfill? Saturday, October 31 is the last day to visit the Kinloss Landfill, located at 690 Kairshea Avenue.

The landfill will reopen in spring 2027.
